P.F.Chang's Deira City Center, Dubai

Wednesday night, 13 March 2013, Caren felt so generous to treat me and Yolly for a dinner at P.F. Changs in Deira City Center.  From work, we rode the Metro and alighted off Deira City Center Station.

As a starter and appetizer, we ordered the famous dynamite shrimp and the lettuce wrap.  The waiter, Ricky explained very well their menus that's why we're able to order quite a lot of food.  Good thing
we just finished our 2-week diet.

NIDO LOVE to MY SON

Dear Gorby,

Always remember that I will always be your number one supporter.  In both success and failure, I will be behind your back.  In good times and bad times, you know i'm always with you.  Remember to bring to the outside world what you have learned from me.  In times of difficult decisions, always think of what would mommy say.  Whatever you do and wherever you go, I will always be with you.  Do not be afraid to fail but do not forget the lesson from the failure.  No matter what, I love  you my son.

Love,

Mommy

DIY Rainbow Loom Band

It has been awarded the toy of the year 2014, people’s choice award, activity of the year award, educational toy of the year and many other awards and nominations.  It is both a popular past time and a source of income for many.  The Rainbow Loom Band or Loom Band is this generation’s version of the friendship bracelet which is as ancient as the Mayans.  Now, it is currently the craze not only for crafters but also for children and adult alike.

According to Wikipedia, the Rainbow Loom Band was created by Cheong Choon Ng, a Malaysian immigrant of Chinese descent who came to the United States in 1991 to attend the Wichita State University where he earned a graduate degree of mechanical engineering.  He was employed as a crash-test engineer for Nissan Motor Company in 2010 when he conceived the idea of a toy loom for rubber-band crafting while watching his young daughters make rubber-band jewelry. His prototype, which he called Twistz Bandz, used a wooden board, pushpins, and dental hooks.  Encouraged by his family to market the product commercially, he invested $10,000 and found a factory in China to manufacture the parts, which he and his wife assembled in their home in June 2011.  Ng renamed his product after discovering an elastic hair band on the market named Twist Band.  His brother and niece came up with the name Rainbow Loom.

How is the Rainbow Loom Band made?  Using a Rainbow Loom, a peg-like board measuring about 2 inches in width and 8 inches in length, colored rubber bands are pulled and looped by means of a plastic crochet hook.  The resulting loops can be made into different shapes and into bracelets.  The Rainbow Loom kit, which can be bought online or from different stores include The Rainbow Loom, the plastic crochet hook, some rubber bands and a C-shaped or S-shaped fasteners to lock the band.

But how can we do a Rainbow Loom Band without the kit?  When I was small, we used to play with rubber bands, tied them together to create a long tie or garter and use it for crossing over or jumping over it.  The same principle is used in creating a Loom Band.  First, you will need a peg.  If you do not have the kit, then use the two-pronged mobile charger as your peg.  See below.

Then, place one band on the two prongs while twisting it like #8.  Add another band this time do not twist.  Add one more band, making it three bands.

Next, get a hook or just use your fingers to grab the bottom band from the outside, do this both side,  and place it over the top band.  Place another band on top and do the same again until you finish the desired length of your bracelet.

To lock the bracelet, you will need a C-lock or S-lock.  Hold on to the end of your bracelet.  Grabs your C-clip and attach the end of the bracelet.  Then, attach the other end of the bracelet.  Now you have your Rainbow Loom Band.

Alternatively, you can use two fingers as pegs but be very careful not to keep the bands on for long, otherwise you might get sore fingers.  Enjoy!

Food Transformation

This is mandi transformation.  Going, going, gone. Ha ha ha.  Mandi is an arabic food consisting of yellow colored rice, fish, chicken or lamb.

We have heard them all.  Challenge after challenge.   Reality TV shows after another.  Social media challenge gone viral.  The biggest loser, 100 happy days, your weight in gold, walk for autism, and of course the latest craze, The ALS Ice bucket challenge.

These challenges aim to eradicate certain disease, sadness, isolation and obesity, etc.   But there is one ultimate challenge not only for those who are fat or thin, black or white, not only for the physically challenged or the mentally handicapped, not only for those who are social media addict, but for everyone especially for us who are working in a hospital environment.    The challenge that could save lives - The hand hygiene challenge!

Hand hygiene is the most effective measure of preventing the spread of infection.  It involves washing with soap and water for visibly dirty hands or waterless antimicrobial agent to the surface of the hands, which kills germs in seconds.  It is one of the easiest and most effective ways of preventing the transfer of infection to patients, visitors and among healthcare workers.

There are five moments of hand hygiene according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

Germs are everywhere.  We do not see them attacking and causing lives to many.  We have to act against these harmful germs.  The best solution against germs is hand hygiene.  The hand hygiene challenge is not only for certain individuals but it is of universal concern.

It does not matter which area you work for or which advocacy you campaign for,  I nominate you for the hand hygiene challenge!  Do not wait for 24 hours.  Just do it now!

It’s complicated (A thought on miscommunication in the workplace)

It’s complicated would mean a very problematic or difficult situation or condition – as in social media status.  Things get complicated when there is no proper communication.  In the workplace, there are a lot of reasons why miscommunication happens.

Being in a multicultural setting, the American Hospital of Dubai is not spared from miscommunications.  Having worked here for almost nine years, I have seen how miscommunication happens in the workplace and how it is dealt with by the excellent staff of this hospital.

Through the years, I have observed the following causes of miscommunication in the hospital and how to deal with them:

1.       Unclear instructions.  This would usually lead to misinterpretation.  If the instructions given are not direct to the point, that is where the problem rises.  One solution to this is giving proper instructions and making sure that both parties have the same understanding of the instructions.

2.      Language barrier.  The hospital has employed practically hundreds of different nationalities.  Though English is the main language in the American Hospital of Dubai, chances are native languages are spoken on duty, which somehow affects the quality of communication.    This was dealt by the management by imposing an “English only” environment in the hospital.

3.      Gestures.  Different cultures have different body language and non-verbal communication interpretation.  Here in the hospital, we have hundreds of different cultures.   Moving the head from side to side would mean “Yes” to Indians but for Filipinos, it means “No”.     Learning the culture of other people and adapting to them is one way of preventing misinterpretation of non-verbal communications.

4.      Poor listening.  During a conversation, sometimes we tend to cut the person talking because we strongly disagree on what that person is saying.  It would stir up a heated discussion or worse, misunderstanding.  We forget to listen attentively to what is being said, thereby creating miscommunication.  The best thing to do is listen closely.  Wait for the other person to finish what he is saying before you speak.  Never cut someone who is talking especially when being given instructions.  Ask your questions after he finishes what he is saying.

Getting things complicated in a workplace such as the American Hospital of Dubai is inevitable.  Being in a multicultural workplace, there are a lot of things that should be considered to have an effective communication.  There may be a lot of causes why miscommunication happens.  One thing’s for sure, any miscommunication can be resolved when dealt with properly.   Then, we can start saying, “uncomplicated” instead of “it’s complicated”.
